Auto Insurance FAQs

Texas law requires drivers to show proof they can pay for accidents they cause. Most people do this by buying Liability Insurance. The current minimum limits, often referred to as 30/60/25, are:

$30,000 bodily injury for each person.
$60,000 bodily injury per accident.
$25,000 for property damage per accident.
Texas is an "At-Fault" state (also known as a tort state). This means the person responsible for the accident is legally liable for the damages. Once coverage is determined, the insurance company is typically responsible for paying the other party’s medical bills and repair costs, up to the policy limits.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)covers medical expenses and a percentage of lost wages for you and your passengers, regardless of who is at fault in the accident and up to the insurance policy limits.

Note: In Texas, insurance companies are required to offer you at least $2,500 in PIP. If you don't want it, you must reject it in writing. PIP is highly recommended because it provides immediate coverage for medical expenses or lost wages regardless of fault.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage is designed for this instance. While the law requires all drivers to have insurance, many still drive without it. Up to policy limits, UM/UIM covers the cost of yours and your passenger’s bodily injury if the other driver is at fault, has no insurance or not enough insurance to cover your medical bills. Like PIP, you must reject this coverage in writing if you do not want it.
Generally, yes. In Texas, moving violations like speeding or running a red light stay on your driving record for at least three years. Insurance companies view these as indicators of higher risk, which usually results in a premium increase.

Home Insurance FAQs

Understanding home insurance in Texas is a bit different than in other states, primarily due to our unique weather patterns—from Gulf Coast hurricanes to West Texas hailstorms.

Here are the top five most common questions homeowners ask about Texas homeowners insurance policies.

In almost all cases, no. Standard Texas homeowners’ policies do not cover damage caused by flood or "rising water."

The Solution: You must purchase a separate flood insurance policy, typically through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or a private insurer.
The Risk: Even if you aren't in a high-risk "flood zone," a significant portion of Texas flood claims come from low-to-moderate risk areas.
This is perhaps the most important distinction in your policy.

Replacement Cost (RCV): Pays for the cost to repair or replace your home and belongings at today's prices, without deducting for age or wear and tear.
Actual Cash Value (ACV): Factors in depreciation. ACV will pay for the cost of loss less depreciation, which can be significant. This is why Replacement Cost (RCV) is highly recommended whenever it is available.

Note: Many Texas policies now default to ACV for roofs over a certain age. Ensure you know which one you have, as an ACV roof claim could leave you with a massive out-of-pocket bill.
Many Texas policies have a separate, higher deductible for Wind and Hail damage.

Other Perils Deductible: The deductible for something other than wind or hail, like fire or theft. It is usually a percentage of the dwelling coverage limit but sometimes it can be a flat dollar deductible (e.g., $1,000).
Wind/Hail Deductible: Often a percentage of your home's insured value (e.g., 1%, 2%, or 5%).
Example: If the dwelling limit on your home insurance policy is $300,000 and you have a 2% wind/hail deductible, you will pay $6,000 out-of-pocket before insurance kicks in for wind/hail damage.
It depends on your policy's "Roof Surface Endorsement."

• As of 2026, many Texas insurers are moving toward ACV-only coverage for roofs older than 10 or 15 years.
• If your roof is in poor condition, a company may refuse to renew your policy unless you replace it.
Pro Tip: If you replace your roof with impact-resistant shingles (Class 4), many Texas insurers offer a significant premium discount. Make sure to keep a copy of the Impact-Resistant Roofing Installation certificate from the roofer. We also recommend getting city building permits whenever possible, keep copies of the paid roofing receipts in the roofer’s company letterhead and take pictures.
• Most companies today include an exterior inspection of the home. The inspection is supposed to point out anything that increases the risk to the company. For example, an empty or unfenced swimming pool can lead to severe or fatal injury.
• The roof is in disrepair.
Pro Tip: We recommend keeping the yard clean and be sure to show pride of ownership.
