Health Insurance FAQs

Here are 5 frequently asked questions about health insurance, based on guidance from HealthCare.gov:

The Health Insurance Marketplace® (also known as the "exchange") is a service that helps people shop for and enroll in health insurance. Operated by the federal government at HealthCare.gov (or by individual states), the Marketplace allows you to compare plans based on price, benefits, and quality. When you fill out an application, you can also find out if you qualify for lower monthly premiums or savings on out-of-pocket costs based on your household income.
All health insurance plans offered through the HealthCare.gov Marketplace must cover ten essential health benefits. These minimum requirements include:
• Ambulatory patient services (outpatient care)
• Emergency services and hospitalization
• Pregnancy, maternity, and newborn care (both before and after birth)
• Mental health and substance use disorder services
• Prescription drugs and laboratory services
• Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices
• Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
Premium: This is the monthly amount you pay to your insurance company to keep your health insurance active, regardless of whether you receive medical services that month.
Deductible: This is the amount of money you must pay out-of-pocket for covered medical services or items each year before your insurance plan begins to pay. (Certain free preventive services are exceptions and are covered even before you meet your deductible.)
The four metal categories categorize health plans by how you and the plan share costs:
Bronze: Lower premiums, but higher deductibles and out-of-pocket costs.
Silver: Moderate premiums, and moderate deductibles and out-of-pocket costs.
Gold: Higher premiums, but lower deductibles and out-of-pocket costs.
Platinum: Highest premiums, but the lowest deductibles and out-of-pocket costs.
Note: These categories are designed to indicate cost-sharing and do not reflect the quality of care.
Generally, you can only enroll during the annual Open Enrollment Period, which typically occurs in the fall. However, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) outside of this timeframe if you experience a "qualifying life event." Examples of qualifying events include losing previous health coverage, getting married, having a baby, or moving to a new coverage area.
